View Article  Thomas Slave Owners

Today, I visited the Family History Center in NE Philadelphia to review probate and will information on the film I had ordered for Thomas slaveowners in Montgomery County, Alabama.

The first slaveowner I came acoss was John Thomas who died in sometime in 1835.

John Thomas owned approximately 221 slaves.  The most unusual part of this inventory of slaves, is that some of the slaves had last names and seemed to be grouped by family members.

I am in the process of transcribing this inventory to post as a web page.

View Article  Orange Thomas

Orange Thomas was my maternal great-grandfather.  His daughter, Hannah, was my grandmother.

Orange was born approximately 1860 in Alabama. Based on the 1880 census record, he and his family were residing in the Pike Road section of Montgomery, Alabama.

I was unable to find Orange on the 1870 census.  The only Orange Thomas that was found was living in Arkansas (Union Township) with a family by the name of Bill and Sarah Joseph.  His age was stated as 15.

A few weeks ago, I ordered microfilm of probate records in Montgomery County, Alabama for the surnames of Thomas, Thompson, etc. in an effort to see if Orange could be found on any of these records.

While researching for this information, I will extract all slave related data and create a webpage to assist others in their endeavors.

Over the past month or so, I've met some new descendants and each had something to add to my research.  I only found out of their existence over the past year or so.  Both of these men are now residing in Cleveland, Ohio.

On January 1, 2006, I contacted Calvin Harris who also gave me the telephone number of his maternal uncle, LeRoy Harris..

Calvin Harris aka Lonnie Martin, age 74

Calvin is the son of Annie Harris, the daughter of Frank and Emma Barrow Harris.  Calvin was born 03/20/1931 in Tuskegee, AL.  Annie died when Calvin was a little boy--he doesn't remember anything about his mother.  She was shot by a boyfriend and later died of her wounds.  Calvin would eventually be raised by Ms. Elvira Barrow-Martin.   This is about when Calvin began using the alias Lonnie Martin.  When he was about 15 years old, he began working at the saw mill in Tuskegee.  He worked along side my Uncle Charles Harris, aka Uncle Moot.  When Calvin was about 20 years old, my Uncle Henry aka Bayboy brought him to Yardley, Pa.  He later married, May Bell and moved to Trenton, NJ.  Once in Trenton he lived with my sister Louise and her husband William Howard.

Leroy Harris

Leroy Harris is the son of Frank and Emma Barrow Harris.
Leroy was married to Zepherine ?, who was born in Georgia.   They have two children:  Gwen  born in 1955 and Allen born in 1956.  His wife, Zepherine died in 1980.

It was extremely nice to talk with both of my older cousins.  They did remember my parents as well as my other Aunts and Uncles.  Hopefully, I will have the chance to meet both of them this summer.

Love you, Devie!!  Nana

View Article  Who was Rebecca Fitzpatrick?
After a long day of work, I'm most anxious to get home to browse the internet and to open the mail--especially after sending for any information that would enlighten the ongoing genealogy research!  Well, today was no exception, there was something in the mail. In a previous post, it was noted that the trek was for finding more about Rebecca Thomas--married name could have been Fitzpatrick.  I bypassed the bills (will tackle them later) to see an extraordinary find--a reponse from the Social Security Administration.  I sat down with my thoughts and began to open the letter and realized the first name matched.  However, it was downhill from there.  When trying to trace an ancestor through the Social Security Administration, most folks use Ancestry.com as a "lead" in the right direction.  Sometimes this can be tricky (like what happened to me)!  Firstly, the cost of these applications, up until July 1, 2001, maybe 2002, was only $7.00.  Before the June 30th deadline, I did a mad dash to obtain about 7 at a total cost of $49.  On July 1st, the cost increased by 400% to $27 per request!!  Now, what if the application you receive is not what you wanted!  SSA says it's your problem!  Well, this is exactly what happened with this newly arrived SS data.  The application SS# matched the name for Rebecca Fitzpatrick found in the Ancestry database.  But, this was not the name on the SS Application!  This application is for a Rebecca Williams Gates whose parents were Bryant Williams and Clara Sanders of Chelsea, Macon County, Alabama.  This is just a few of the disappoints of genealogy research.  Well, all is not lost -- I still have Hattie Harris' possible death certificate to wait on.

During the month of  December 2004 the following research activities were conducted:

1)  Contacted the Florida Vital Records for the death record of Hattie Harris-Streeter.  Based on information furnished by her daughter, Daisy Brown, Hattie died in 1966.

2)  Sent a request to the Social Security Administration for a copy of the registration for a Rebecca Fitzpatrick--possibly the sister of Hannah Thomas.  Rebecca died during the 1970's.  I do remember my mom, grandmother and Uncle Buster driving to Montgomery, Alabama to attend her funeral.

Research findings will be posted upon receipt of response.
